{"id":630,"date":"2009-08-14T14:38:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-14T14:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanootoday.com\/?p=630"},"modified":"2021-06-20T02:15:27","modified_gmt":"2021-06-20T02:15:27","slug":"an-overview-of-oo-gauge-in-railroad-magazine-1940-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanootoday.com\/?p=630","title":{"rendered":"An Overview of OO Gauge in Railroad Magazine, 1940-47"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americanootoday.com\/?p=637\">Following up on the post on Midlin OO gauge in <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Railroad Magazine,<\/span><\/a> I recently obtained three issues that are great examples of OO coverage in this classic magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, I should note that there is no current publication quite like <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Railroad Magazine,&nbsp;<\/span>at least on trains. It was a popular \u201cpulp\u201d magazine and besides articles on prototype trains and some model railroad features a thrust of the publication was railroad fiction, stories of railroading of the past and their present day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Themes were developed in multiple articles in any given issue. So for example in the December, 1941 issue a theme was the caboose and one of the articles in this issue was on building an Erie bobber caboose. The plan with the article is scaled just a bit over OO, and the article reads a bit like fiction. From it you can tell how to build one but it is not clear that the unnamed author had actually built one exactly as described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/americanootoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Railroad-1-42.jpg?resize=613%2C341&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1709\" width=\"613\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/americanootoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Railroad-1-42.jpg?w=1001&amp;ssl=1 1001w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/americanootoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Railroad-1-42.jpg?resize=300%2C167&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/americanootoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Railroad-1-42.jpg?resize=768%2C427&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A theme in the January, 1942 issue is PRR electric locomotives. In relation to that we get a real OO gauge feature, \u201cBuild a High-Speed Freight Motor\u201d by Henry B. Comstock. He is listed as \u201cAssociate Editor, Railroad Magazine\u201d and was obviously a real OO enthusiast. With photos, illustrations, and text he describes how to build from scratch a Modified P-5a. The body was made from five pieces of maple, this photo showing the completed model. Plans are included for the OO version of this model in this seven page feature article, the only essential commercial parts needed being the motor, gears, and wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to information received from William Chapin,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Railroad Magazine<\/span> featured OO projects in a number of issues from 1940-47. One of the last OO gauge features is on The Cincinnatian, subtitled \u201cBuild an OO Gage Model of America\u2019s Newest Streamlined Steam Train,\u201d found in the June 1947 issue, by \u201cThe Nutsplitter.\u201d It is not a detailed article but is OO oriented and is again a part of a series of articles related to this train.
