A reefer by Carl Appel
In the same lot with the Hoffman reefer in the previous post was this model. It caught my eye, after it came, for a couple reasons. Mostly visible in this underframe view.

Look at those extra pieces of sheet lead! At some point in the past I had two cars, Nason round top boxcars, come with that same detail. Those models may be seen here.
The weights puzzled me at the time to be sure. They were clearly very intentional, done by an operator. On those boxcars I took the pieces off, but you can still see the screw holes in the other article. As seen above, the pieces were cut to fit the spaces perfectly and attached with small screws. And why bother painting them? They are not visible on the layout.
Then also you will notice the Schorr trucks, the Nason brake cylinder with brake lines added, and also the frame is an interesting upgrade. It’s a bronze Nason flat car frame cut to fit. All of that would be visible in operation. Oh, and speaking of operation, of course it has the early, pre-1960 style Kadee couplers (more on those here, one of the more popular articles on the site).
All told, I’d say this Nason reefer is another a car by Carl Appel, builder of the most famous OO layout, the Norfolk and Ohio (more on that here).
I didn’t expect to find that in this eBay lot! Proving again you never know what you’ll find out there.
