Three more Reefers of Mystery
In my book there is a section of mystery items. I still have not identified any of them. Al Johnson spotted another example of one of the mystery cars, and then found two more in his collection.
First we have the mystery car I also have. I can’t tell you what it is, but this one is built up nicely. Three photos are below, seen with the page of the book where my example is shown.
Next we have this interesting SFRD car. First, some photos.
Besides the really interesting treatment of the ends, the truck really catches my eye. We both think it is the same as this one that I’ve featured in a prior post, on the left. The maker is still unknown. But if I had to guess, for any of these cars really, I would think about Raymond Willey. For sure he produced reefer sides and a truck, could these be them? See page 57 of my book for the references. I would like to think a few examples survived. A close up of the truck is below.
The sides and the truck have the look of commercial products, but could also just be the work of some talented individual, back in those days before TV and the Internet.
Finally, we have this neat BREX car that also is a total mystery but could also possibly be a Willey product. Certainly it was built by the same person as the SFRD car, note especially again the interesting car ends.
This one has a few Nason parts visible, notably the couplers, trucks, and the hatches.
There are some interesting cars out there! Give your collection a look, you may find more examples of these too. Thanks again to Al Johnson for sharing the photos.
