A Scale-Craft 4-6-0 with a Nason tender
The first steamer on my layout was this Scale-Craft 4-6-0. One of the original models when the Scale-Craft line was introduced in 1937 and available into the 1950s, this die cast model is one of the most common models in OO, also produced as a 4-4-2 and as a 4-6-4T.
This particular 4-6-0 has a story. I purchased it sometime around 1980 from a gentleman named Dave Sacks who was an “OOldimer” and had been involved with the New Jersey group of OO gaugers that was active after WWII. One big plus for me was the tender that came with the model. This is not the stock tender, it is actually the tender from a Nason 2-8-0, sand cast bronze and nicely proportioned. Also the locomotive ran which was another plus. The original motor had been replaced with a slightly smaller 12V DC motor of uncertain origin; it stuck out the back more than the original but still gets the engine down the track today (rather noisily, due to the spur gears) with six or eight cars.
On the negative side this model as purchased was very ugly!! He had “streamlined” the model and had painted it blue. Paint stripper is a great thing, however, and after some effort I got it running and looking pretty much as Scale-Craft (and Nason) intended. The front section of the boiler is a little odd looking to the modern eye but when introduced this was a great model that was quite popular with OO gaugers.
UPDATE: I have re-motored my first 4-6-0 model with an original S-C 24 volt DC motor. it is a smooth runner!
